A dredging operation has returned the seabed of PSA Voltri-Pra to its original depth of 15 metres to quay level. In this way the necessary draft for the new container ships are guaranteed.
Over the course of the years, the everyday activity of the ships’ propeller engines had created a zone of sand build-up near the quay, with a subsequent reduction of the depth of the seabed. With the dredging operation the sediment was repositioned away from the build-up area and deposited in the deeper zones, bringing the draft back to 15 metres.
The operation was carried out with complete respect for the environment and in the strictest compliance with the current legislation of the Region of Liguria. Particular attention was paid to turbidity levels of the water. To avoid any alternation of the normal clearness of the water, the scow withdrew the sediment whilst maintaining the seal of the grab, and then repositioning the sediment in the required zone.
